Take a whole day with your family to come and visit La Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg, a must see when in Normandy. Dedicated to man’s adventures under the sea, it has dropped anchor in the fine Art deco Transatlantic liner terminal. In 2012 La Cité de la Mer was extended, to house a one-of-a-kind exhibition, "Titanic, return to Cherbourg", about the history of European emigration to the New World and about the legendary liner that called at Cherbourg on 10th April 1912. Your visit will take you through the magnificent Art deco Luggage Hall where you will discover the experiences of emigrants, and then you will embark on the area dedicated to the Titanic, in a decor redrawing the three stages of the liner’s last journey: the crossing, the collision, and the sinking of the ship. In La Cité de la Mer, you can discover the ocean depths on a large scale! During an unforgettable day, full of excitement, you will live through an adventure, you will have fun, you will be filled with wonder, and learn all there is to know about deep-sea exploration, an adventure that is still being played out. Visit Le Redoutable: use our audio-guide commentary to follow in the steps of the Captain of the largest submarine open to public in the world. You will find out all there is to know about this monster of technology, all 8,000 tonnes of her! … from the operational compartments to the living space, where a crew of 130 men lived for 70 days at a time. The visit lasts 40 minutes, and is open to all aged five and over. Discover the Ocean Centre. Each one of the 17 aquariums is seething with amazing species of fish. Their beauty will move you, but they will also surprise you by their intelligence… Did you know that some have provided inspiration for the people trying to find ways to explore the ocean depths? The Abyssal Aquarium will impress all the members of the family with its 10.7-metre deep chasm. In its Tahitian ecosystem, you will sway to the dance of a thousand original colourful fishes. The virtual attraction “Walking into the Depths”: the whole family will enjoy their virtual adventure in the company of Captain Glass, a colourful character who will take you down to the ocean bed, and who has a surprise in store for you at the end of your mission! (takes 50 minutes). The Great Hall of Men and Machines. As you arrive in the Entrance Hall, you will be welcomed by 11 iconic machines that have all taken part in deep sea diving operations. From Fulton’s Nautilus, which reached a depth of 10 metres in 1800, to the Archimedes, with its 9,545-metre dive in 1962, the whole history of international deep-sea diving is here before you!
